Biography
Since 1972, Haruko’s professional practice has been as an interdisciplinary artist, with the strongest area being the visual arts. Living in Vancouver, she works primarily as an exhibition artist creating installations, many of which are viewer interactive or animated through natural forces. Haruko often uses natural detritus or recycled materials, which she gathers and processes, in ephemeral works. Her focus is often informed by environmental concerns, exploring concepts of place, history and culture.
Haruko immerses herself in a landscape without preconceived ideas. She uses her ears and eyes to acclimatize to the environment, trusting the land will speak to the artist in her. Gathering natural materials specific to that land, combined with this method of aural/visual recording, weaves together in a visual narrative that is the dialogue between her and place.
