The LLAMA Project’s Canada-Mexico collaboration examines the relationships between environment, culture and social and political structures evident in both Mexico and Canada. Specific issues such as endangered species, migration, hybridity and history are investigated though contemporary artistic practice such as installation, mixed media, ceramics, and photography.

The artwork will address these topics:

1) Migrations, both human and wildlife
2) Endangered species
3) Culture/home and potential loss of them.
4) “Sense of place” which is about one’s connection to self through landscape and history. Sense of place also addresses cultural identity and uniqueness–we ask what makes us distinct as individuals and cultural groups, and how can we connect as humans despite the differences. It involves communication, interconnections and being open to the world around you.

But more importantly it is a process of cultural exchange, creating art in each others company, deepening empathy and learning to trust each other. This is why it is crucial for the artists to spend time with each other in both countries to experience the “feel” of those places and the connections between each other.
