XaQuixe Glass Studio (Oaxaca, Mexico)
LLAMA artists visited this studio while in Mexico early in 2009. Salime Harp and Christian Thornton founded the XaQuixe Studio in 2002 to create works of art and design using glassblowing. The idea of opening a glassblowing studio in southern Mexico was born from the desire to produce fine decorative pieces as well as supporting the Oaxacan economy by providing mezcal producers with custom-made bottles. Christian has developed a training program for people in the communities surrounding Etla, Oaxaca. The program not only retrains individuals and provides employment, but sets a real example of conservation and sustainability by utilizing glass from the local dump in an innovative recycling program. XaQuixe is located near the dump and the team mixes the discarded glass to create beautiful products that are sold locally.
Oaxaca Maiz
Forty-eight female artists who either are or have been working in Oaxaca these past few years were inspired to protest in a creative manner with works of art that communicate the culture of maize. LLAMA artist Lorena Silva is part of this collective.
